Keys to Victory in Super Bowl of Life

I had fun preaching this a few years ago and thought I would put in on the blog.

Keys to Victory in the Super Bowl of Life

Psalms 98:1

O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

Introduction: Many people are predicting that Peyton Manning’s golden arm is going to secure his team a victory in tonight’s Super Bowl. Others are sure that the Bears defense will be the difference they need.

I wanted to give you a very special Super Bowl message this evening. Tonight I’m going to give you 6 keys to victory in the Super Bowl of life. The good news is that there are no commercial interruptions. The bad news is that we will not be serving refreshments during the game. I hope that this message reminds you of the keys to victory in your life. Unlike the game being played in Florida tonight between the Colts and Bears that everyone will forget sooner than those players realize, the game of life you and I are in is for real. The consequences of tonight’s Super Bowl are minimal compared to the consequences of your life.

Having established the importance of the game we are involved in, please consider these keys to victory.

I. You need a consistent running attack.

Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

A. You have to keep running even when it seems like your not gaining ground.

B. You have to remember the game is not one play.

C. You have to keep the goal line in focus at all times.

Philippians 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

II. You need to have a solid defense.

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

A. Prepare for an aggressive attack against your team.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

B. Stand firm against the swelling tide of opposition.

Ephesians 6:13-14 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

C. Never give up even when things look bad for the team.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

III. You need to limit mental mistakes.

1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

A. Guard your thoughts during the game.

Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

B. Concentrate on the goal.

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

C. Put in the necessary preparation for the game.

IV. You cannot fumble opportunities away.

A. To witness for Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

B. To serve the Lord.

Matthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

C. To be a blessing.

Galatians 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

V. You must memorize the playbook.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

A. The plays are perfectly designed.

Psalms 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

B. The plays in it will work.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

C. The plays must be practiced often.

Repetition is the key to success in executing a spiritual game plan.

Titus 3:14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

VI. You have to listen to the coach.

A. He has devised a winning strategy.

1. It only needs to be executed as directed.

Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

B. He is guiding us to victory.

1. He has guaranteed victory for His team.

1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

C. He can be trusted without wavering.

1. He will not ask you to do something you are not able to do.

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Conclusion: Now go out there and win!
